Mel Shepherd has worked in Early Years for over 15 years, starting her journey after completing a Primary Teaching degree with an Early Years specialism at St Mary’s University in Twickenham. It was during her studies that she discovered her passion for the Early Years stage, recognising the profound impact this time has on children’s development. She went on to complete her Early Years Professional Status, which further solidified her love and commitment to this vital stage of education.
Mel’s career has been varied, spanning roles in both schools and nurseries, in a range of roles. For the past 12 years, she worked with a group of nurseries, progressing from Nursery Practitioner to Room Leader, into management, and ultimately leading Quality and Childcare across the entire group.
Mel is passionate about supporting leadership and management teams to enhance their own skills and build the confidence and expertise of their staff. She has a strong belief in the importance of creating high-quality Early Years environments where every child is treated as an individual. She’s also a firm advocate for the power of children’s books and their essential role in early education.
Her approach is collaborative, working closely with leadership teams to develop practice through observation, coaching, and professional discussions tailored to their needs.
Mel has extensive experience dealing with Ofsted and is passionate about working with teams to build confidence and helping them to shine in inpections.
Recently, Mel added to her qualifications by completing her Award in Education and Training, as well as becoming certified to teach Paediatric First Aid and First Aid at Work. She loves the opportunity to teach adults as well as children and relishes the variety this brings to her work.
Outside of work, Mel is a proper Yorkshire girl, having grown up by the coast in Scarborough and now living in York with her husband and two daughters. She loves exploring the local area, camping holidays with her family, and is a self-confessed theatre enthusiast—any excuse for a trip to London to see a good show is her idea of heaven!
Mel’s love of learning and meeting new people is what drives her. Every setting she visits offers a chance to share her expertise while also learning something new herself.
